Birka loves pink. And it was Birka’s birthday. So the Happy Crafty Friends had a pink blog hop for her and invited everyone to make a pink birthday card.
This looks nothing like I had envisaged. Apart from the background that is, that went as planned. It all started so well: the heat embossing and the Distress ink blending went smoothly and gave me the base that I wanted for the card.
But the flowers… They were supposed to be a combination of microfine glitter and foil, but that really wasn’t destined to be. The plan was to die-cut flowers from card covered with Stick It adhesive sheet, dab the foil on in a distressed manner and then fill in the gaps with the glitter.
First off I discovered that I didn’t have any proper pink glitter (but the ruby would do because I knew I had some hot pink foil to balance it). And that’s when I discovered that the Heidi Swapp reactive foil is, pretty much, just heat reactive — unlike other foils which happily stick to adhesive and peel off the carrier sheet, it just stuck fast and I ended up tearing some of the die-cuts trying to pull it off.
So, lesson learned, I abandoned that idea and made the flowers from pink vellum instead. I had to have a bit of sparkle though, and that came from the growing collection of glitter tape that I have (there are only ten rolls, that’s not excessive, barely into double figures) which luckily includes two different pinks.
I stamped the sentiment on kraft card and popped that up on thin foam tape over the top of the glitter tape, arranged the flowers and added sprinkles to their centres, and then mounted the whole panel on a pink card base using some more foam tape.
I do like the end result, it’s just a bit annoying that it’s not the one I pictured when I started. But that will (maybe*) teach me not to leave things to the last minute so I have time to get supplies that work rather than fighting with ones that will never do what I want.
*though probably not, if I’m honest
