Amigurumi: air & water

air and water amigurumi

The fourth in my series of amigurumi throwback posts and this one gathers together the birds and sea creatures.

CRA0032 owlets

Owlets

I think this was the first amigurumi pattern I crocheted and it’s a good introduction to making little critters. It doesn’t take long, but it manages to introduce a number of techniques: crocheting in rounds and rows, attaching decoration with safety eyes and sewing, attaching more elements by crocheting into a finished piece, and shaping by stitching through the work. I have made quite a few of these for people.

Pattern: Owlets (pdf) by Roman Sock. Other free patterns are available as well.

CRA0004 baby owl

Baby owl

One of the first patterns I crocheted that had a colour change. Luckily the design allowed you to cover up the change point with the eyes and beak. I’ve since come across instructions for making the transitions more cleanly.

CRA0015 duck

Duck

Another of the tiny ami patterns from Amigurumi World. It’s not my favourite tiny ami — I think the bunnies take that title — but it filled my need for a drake/duck for the Ubuntu critters.

CRA0032 blue heron

Blue heron

Another Ubuntu critter. This was a bit more of a challenging make, with the pipe cleaner legs and neck. Surprisingly, it will actually stand up on its own, though it was tricky getting the balance right.

Ubuntu version: 2.8 Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron)

Pattern: I have a text file with the pattern, but I cannot find the original source anywhere.

March 2023: I have put what I do have online here.

CRA0006 octopus

Octopus

Another early make. the crocheting is fine, but I could have done a much better job of sewing the legs on evenly! But, it’s a smiley purple octopus, what’s not to love…

CRA0035 narwhal

Narwhal

For a change, an Ubuntu critter that I genuinely like. It’s nice when you get patterns with variations like this one, more options for cuteness. As much as the actual design, I think I just like the grey and white colour scheme.

Ubuntu version: 2.14 Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal)

Pattern: Crochet Swordfish and Manatee Pattern Set PDF (plus Narwhal Pattern) from NeedleNoodles on Etsy
