So my mum called asking me if I could make her a birthday card for her brother, but she had absolutely no suggestions for the design 🤔 It’s tricky enough making cards for men, but when you have no starting point to work from… Anyway, this is what I came up with…
How:
The bird was stamped on Neenah solar white and coloured with dye inks and sponge daubers; the eyes were accentuated using Copic opaque white paint.
The balloons were also coloured with dye inks, but this time on Distress specialty stamping paper, which is why they have a shinier finish to them.
The background was masked and blended with Distress inks on Strathmore paper.
(Yes, I was playing around with different papers today. At some point I do plan to get around to doing a comparison of some of the papers and mediums that I have.)
I played around with a couple of options for the sentiment, but ended up testing out foiling laser print on black paper, which worked pretty well.
The card ended up being a completely non-standard size. I basically created the bird, balloons and sentiment and then worked out how big a card would be needed to fit them on. Luckily I have an envelope punch board and a pack of 12″ paper which make it easy to create custom envelopes.
Grey card, black paper and the blended background were layered over a white card base, with a couple of strips of silver tape added for some extra shine. The balloons were attached to the bird with sewing thread, the bird was glued flat to the background and the balloons were popped up on foam tape, as was the sentiment.
