White tiger

Every month the IG Crafty Crew sets one easy and one hard just-for-fun challenge over on Instagram. I normally forget to join in, but I had no excuse for February as I was already doing the 30-day colouring challenge and this month’s easy challenge was to use the Copic colour of the month — ultraviolet. But this post is not about that image (which hasn’t made it onto a card yet). This post is about the card I created after being asked to provide the inspiration and theme for the March easy challenge.

I will gloss over the hours of agonising about what theme to choose and whether a particular idea was too difficult for an easy challenge or too simple or too specific or… Suffice it to say that I eventually settled on “spots and stripes“. (I guess it’s a sign of a misspent youth that that phrase brings to mind evenings spent playing pool.)

The idea for the background came when I was watching the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. My eye was caught by some of the costumes, these in particular:

So, having decided to use kraft cardstock for a change, I just recreated that pattern using black Copic marker and multiliner and then added some extra dots and lines until I was happy with how it covered the panel.

Initially, I thought I might put the Valentine’s image over the top — she does have spots on her top and I had added faint stripes to her trousers — but it didn’t sit right so I split them into two separate projects.

Choosing another image to use was simple: it had to be the tiger from the opening ceremony (and also the mascot, though I didn’t realise that at the time). But I don’t have a tiger in my stash. Google images came to my rescue and I found this cute tiger cub digi that was just perfect.

I coloured the tiger, fussy cut him and popped him up on foam tape over a couple of layered circles cut from scraps of patterned paper. Then that was all mounted on top of a strip of vellum. The finishing touch was to use up the last of my stash of silver sparkly sprinkles by putting them in the centre of the background spots.
