Interocitor

interocitor

Sci-fi, bad movies and shaker cards. Yes it was time to make a birthday card for my other half again. This time I went straight for This Island Earth aka Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie and created an interocitor.

Once I found a reasonably clear image of the whole of the interocitor, I used that as the basis for creating my own outline version — this time with a graphics app on the computer rather than the light box as it is mostly straight lines and circles.

Once I’d coloured it, I fussy cut it out, including the inside of the triangular screen, which I then turned into a small shaker element with an alien in the background.

I split the card background in two: half being a floor for the interocitor and the happy birthday to sit on and half being a galaxy background with a space ship and planet and stars. I’ve only tried galaxy backgrounds a couple of times, but I was really happy how this one turned out; it’s amazing how much difference white star spatter makes!

And the important thing is that he loved it 🙂

And now I’m starting to panic over what on earth I’m going to come up with this year!

    1. I really should have explained… the interocitor is a machine from the sci-fi movie This Island Earth (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Film/ThisIslandEarth). It’s the big box with the triangular screen on top.

A shaker is an interactive cardmaking technique. On this card the triangular “screen” is made of two layers: card at the back with the picture of the alien on it and a piece of clear acetate at the front. Small beads or sequins are put in between and the two pieces are fixed together using foam tape all around the edges to stop the beads escaping. So you end up with a card that rattles when you shake it.

  1. Wow. Thanks for explaining. Makes it even more fun! 😎
I love that green alien…perhaps a speech bubble with Happy Birthday in it would’ve been a nice touch and a laugh too.
The only sci-fi I know is Star Trek. Perhaps something from that could be your next card for your other half. ☄
