Paint & stitch cats

After finishing the owl card, I had no time for a break, because I needed to make a card for the other twin — but what to make? A quick check with family revealed that they have a pair of tuxedo kitties. And a quick search through my pattern stash turned up a pair of cats in a moon. Similar in style to the owl, but sufficiently individual to not focus on the whole twins thing.

I’m still experimenting with how to adapt this style to different images, while not making massive amounts of work for myself. This is supposed to be a comparatively quick process (compared to something like the cinema card or the panda).

I decided to just paint the cats on this one. I could have added paint to the flowers and leaves like I did on the owl card, but I felt it would be easier to embroider the flowers rather than try to backstitch around individual petals. I’m getting more confident with adding paint to the fabric; I managed to get a reasonable variation in the depth of colour of the black so the cats have some shape and texture to them. And I still managed to avoid the paint bleeding into the fabric.

I’m really pleased with how this turned out. Especially making the cat outlines into tuxedo cats: there’s not a lot of white visible on a tuxedo from the back, but I think I succeeded in leaving just enough to make it obvious what they are.

  1. This is so sweet and delicate. I particularly appreciate learning about how you tackle the challenges that inevitably come with any project. This card came out so beautifully–and the tuxedo element is totally clear.
