Winter wishes card: Foil and Copic bear

Winter wishes bear

What:

For November’s challenge, Gerda Steiner offered up this little bear with his scarf and mug.

Inspired by:

The colouring on the bear was inspired by a tutorial I found over on the Color Me Copic blog.

The idea:

My initial idea was to foil the digital stamp and sentiment and also to have the image partially cut off at the edge of the panel.

How:

I created the layout with the bear and sentiment on my Mac using Affinity Designer and printed it on the laser printer so that I could foil it using the Minc mini. I used two different foils — copper for the bear and red for the sentiment — I just had to be careful the foils didn’t slip in the transfer folder.

Once the foiling was done, I rounded the corners and sat down to think how best to colour it.

Inspired by a tutorial I found for colouring animals and keeping some texture in the fur, I got out my trusty Copics and had a play. I’m quite pleased with how most of it turned out, but some bits could have done with a smoother transition. Still not bad for a first attempt.

The bear was finished off with a coat of pico embellisher shimmer over the scarf and mug.

I cut out a mask for the bear and used two colours of Distress ink through a Tim Holtz stencil to create the background.

The panel was mounted on a dark green card base (with rounded corners) using a piece of fun foam to pop it up.

Lessons learned:

I am becoming more and more convinced that it isn’t actually possible to photograph a card that has colouring and foiling on so that you can see both the colouring and the foiling. Or at least not without a completely different lighting setup to the one I have.
