Aim: Create a modern sampler by experimenting with texture and pattern.

I chose to base my sampler on an oak leaf; I like leaf motifs and I can draw stylised oak leaves easily. It has the advantage of taking up a reasonable amount of space while still leaving enough around the edges to block into little pattern sections.

I didn’t have much of a plan when I started, I just couched some chunky green yarn around the oak leaf, outlined the sections and then picked random straight stitch variations to fill them up.

The only exceptions are the colonial knots in a couple of the areas and a couple of extra couched yarns around the leaf (I really like the variegated one).

I scribbled a rough stitch guide in my notebook as I went along but it was a bit too messy to share, so I created a version on the computer. And it’s a handy reference for me as I can never remember stitch names.

Very pretty! I used to do a lot of embroidery, but not so much in the last 20+ years. You don’t see it as much, although it seems to be making a comeback. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you. Once you start looking for it, there is a surprising amount of embroidery around now.
