Rose and chamomile

CR00417 square

I finally had to stop procrastinating and actually get around to making a card for my other half’s mum’s birthday.

I love colouring Power Poppy flowers. There’s so much detail in the illustrations that I swear the end result would look gorgeous even if you just coloured it flat with no shading. But, of course, that’s not what I did.

I kept the supporting colouring really simple, but I wanted to create some real depth and contrast on the star of the show, the rose. I also added a little bit of detail with a coloured pencil.

Putting the card together, I created a split base layer with two pieces of patterned paper and overlaid that with a slightly smaller vellum layer. A couple of small strips of glitter washi tape disguised the join; no need to waste tape by covering the whole width when the next thing you do is mount the main image panel on some fun foam and glue it over the top. I thought about adding a sentiment, but I didn’t want to cover up any of the colouring so I just added a few sequins instead.

She loved the card but said I shouldn’t have made it so thick as it cost more to post. I defended my artistic integrity and said that was what the design needed and I was happy to pay more to send it. And besides, where would I tuck the sequins if it wasn’t popped up on fun foam? 🙂
