Presents for sale

A friend of ours regularly buys techy stuff for himself only to turn around and sell it again shortly after; this inspired my other half to suggest that there should be a “for sale” sign somewhere on his birthday card. We had already decided there would be robots and this Lawn Fawn set has a cute little gift stamp, so I decided to have a pile of presents already for sale.

MST3K: The Creature from the Black Lagoon

It’s my other half’s birthday today, so of course I had to create something special and geeky for him. I returned to a common theme: Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Specifically, this time, the new ones where Gypsy appears as a silhouette on-screen and Tom Servo flies around occasionally rather than being stuck in the seats. (If you don’t know MST3K, it’s basically “one man and his robots make fun of bad movies”.)

Birthdays are no respecters of how you’re feeling and annoyingly come along even when you have a horrible flu-y cold. And so it was I had to create a masculine card for my neighbour all while reaching for the tissues and breaking into a sweat. Ideal conditions to try something I haven’t done before 🙄

And that’s how I came to be colouring a vaguely realistic glass of whisky with Copics and coloured pencils.

Vulcan bomber

I grew up not far from Waddington in Lincolnshire so we regularly had the distinctively shaped Vulcan bombers flying overhead. Our neighbour is a big fan of Vulcans so I was happy to create this card for her birthday.

I do love working with stamps and digi stamps, but there is something rather satisfying about creating my own images. I usually work from a source image and my light box because my drawing skills aren’t up to starting with a completely blank page.
